Title: Cellular automata: lives under simple rules

The notion of a cellular automaton originates from von Neumann’s research on automatic computation. It is a kind of highly nonlinear discrete dynamical system, and draws an extensive attention since British mathematician John Conway came up with his “game of life” in 1970. Now cellular automata have applications in a variety of fields like physics, chemistry, biology, engineering and even cosmology. In this talk we will give an introduction to this topics from a mathematical viewpoint, and discuss cellular automata on amenable groups as well as its recent advances in algebraic geometry.
